The free highlights
Rockefeller Center tree. The 2026 tree arrives at the Plaza on November 7, and the official lighting ceremony is on December 2, per Rockefeller Center. From then on it stays lit through the season. Come early in the morning or late at night if you want the kids to actually see it without a wall of phones; the lighting ceremony itself is a broadcast event with brutal crowds.
Fifth Avenue windows. The department store window displays along Fifth Avenue are a free open-air gallery, best done as an evening walk from the tree south toward the Empire State Building.
Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. The city's most over-the-top lights are not a show but a neighborhood: an unofficial tradition where homeowners out-decorate each other. The displays go up around Thanksgiving (November 27, 2026) and stay lit into early January.

Bryant Park: the budget skating win
The Rink at the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park is New York's only free-admission ice rink: 17,000 square feet, entry free, you pay only for skate rental. For the 2026-27 season it runs from October 28, 2026 through February 28, 2027, open daily including holidays, 8:00-22:00 and until midnight from November 19 to January 3. The surrounding holiday market stalls make it a full evening out. Rockefeller Center's rink is the famous one, but it is also the expensive, tiny one; with kids, Bryant Park is the better skating value by far.
What is actually worth paying for
Save the budget for one or two paid anchors rather than sprinkling it everywhere. Good candidates: a big family show, one observation deck on a clear day, and skate rentals at Bryant Park. Easy to skip: the Rockefeller rink (see above), horse carriages, and any "holiday bus tour" - Dyker Heights is free to walk, and a subway ride gets you there. For everything else, our New York with kids on a budget guide lists the year-round free staples, and the family packing list has a winter section worth reading twice: real cold is the main budget threat, because cold kids demand indoor cafes.
